"BIG AND MAJOR"

Deric Ott's approach to painting reflects his singular vision of abstraction and New York City's dynamic energy. Embracing the grid as a structural element, Ott channels a lineage of abstract expression, using oil pastels on paper to capture the lively, chaotic spirit of doors opening throughout the city.

A recent transplant to NYC, Ott (born 2008) views the city as a vast landscape of opportunity—a place that invites exploration and growth. In his own words, "New York is the land of opportunity, where there's always something to see, do, and expand into." His works showcase layers of pink on pink and blues and bold features, like outsized lips and exaggerated eyelashes, that assert a playful, confrontational aesthetic.

Working in an expressive and experimental style, Ott's pieces range from small studies to bold compositions, each echoing a spirit of resilience and humor in challenging times. This body of work embodies a "level up" mentality, pushing the limits of texture, color, and form with a provocative yet beautiful effect.

While Ott's work may draw comparisons to Caravaggio for its raw immediacy or even Cindy Sherman for its subversive edge, it remains a vision distinctly his own—unafraid to ask if we're ready to confront ourselves in today's world, or perhaps, just in time for Halloween.

Deric Ott, a Florida native, presents his debut exhibition at Pocket Utopia this fall. Recently relocated to New York City, Ott joins Pocket Utopia as an artist and a dynamic contributor to the gallery’s programming and vision. In addition to his studies, Ott brings a fresh perspective to the gallery’s social media and ongoing projects, lending his voice to initiatives that reflect his artistic curiosity and commitment. His involvement with Pocket Utopia marks the beginning of his exploration of New York's art scene, where his distinctive approach to abstraction continues to evolve.
